Pre-assessment meeting with parents and child to get input, hear concerns and perceptions, put child at ease before assessment meetings
Phone conversation or email exchange with up to two of your child’s educators, to hear concerns or input
3-4 hours (total) of assessment of your child’s skills in the following areas:
Phonological awareness (with an emphasis on phonemic awareness)
Reading: decoding, sight word recognition, reading rate and fluency, comprehension of fiction and nonfiction texts, application of active reading strategies
Writing: organization, mechanics, clarity of expression for creative AND expository/informational prompts
Spelling: knowledge and application of spelling patterns and “rules”
Math: conceptual understanding, mental math, pencil-and-paper calculation, etc.
Written report including assessment scores and comparison to age- and grade-level norms when applicable; error analysis and explanation of error patterns; suggestions for at-home support; suggestions and resources for outside support when appropriate (e.g. tutors/ interventions, educational neuropsychologists, summer programs, etc)
Follow-up meeting with parents (and, when appropriate, student) to explain the findings of the assessments, what the student’s current skill set and performance may indicate about their educational environment and progress, and to discuss recommendations for the future (at home and in the student’s educational environment). We may also discuss how to share these findings about your student’s current skills and performance with his or her team at school, among other topics.
Cost for this package: $900
This package is for you if:
You have a student between the ages of 8 and 21;
You are interested in learning more about your child’s current level of skill, strengths, and areas in need of more targeted instruction (and sometimes, intensive intervention);
You would like a clearer and objective picture of your child’s skill set: what he or she can do independently, can do with support, and cannot yet do in terms of processing and using oral language, reading, writing, spelling, and math;
You are concerned that your child is falling behind his or her peers in school, and want to know what you can do to help;
There’s been a sudden change in your child’s attitude about, or performance in, school;
You want to ensure you’re doing everything you can at home, to support the learning that’s happening at school;
Your child has already had a comprehensive special education evaluation, and you want an independent, objective assessment of progress;
You would like data about your child’s performance in a variety of skill areas, an analysis of error patterns your child makes, written recommendations for how to support your child’s academic skill development at home, and, if applicable, recommendations for finding providers for targeted interventions in the areas of need.
This package is not for you if:
Your child is under the age of 8;
You would like to know your child’s IQ or cognitive/ intellectual potential;
You are looking for a diagnosis of a learning disability or ADHD;
You already have a strong grasp of how to support your child’s development and learning at home;
You are not concerned about your child’s academic skill development.
